Maurice Clarett Revisited

Live Your Dream

March 11th, 2005

Wow! What in the heck happened with Maurice at the NFL tryouts and then the “March 9th” thing at OSU? Never even heard jack about that March 9th thing. Apparently it didn’t happen in terms of Maurice being there or are they keeping it under wraps?? Well, regardless of what happened with all that, I wanted to revisit this issue because I think that I left it on kind of a negative note last time. To say the least I suppose.

So everyone knows my opinion of Maurice Clarett, right? Well, sure, that is how Maurice strikes me today but I really meant what I said about Maurice Clarett proving me wrong. That is what I really want. Maurice, that whole NFL draft stuff was NOT your last chance. Neither was the March 9th thing. Only YOU can decide when your last chance to try out for the NFL. You have lots of chances left Maurice, lots and lots of chances.

For one, you can go back to college. You still have college availability left, right? OK, then, you can go back to college and play football. Maybe not OSU, but some other college, perhaps. Maybe OSU after all, they ARE getting a new athletic director you know.

Second thing you can do. You can train all this year and go try to be a free agent for the NFL this season, or next season. Be a “walk-on”. Bill Bates, one of my favorite players for the Dallas Cowboys was a walk-on and he played for YEARS with the Dallas Cowboys and he was AWESOME.

The third thing you can do, you can go play for the Canadian football league or even the Arena football league. There was this really great football player from my home town that played for Miami of Ohio and was a stand-out. He actually ended up getting drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but was cut. He could have gone and played in Canada, but he didn’t, he just ended up in a bar back in my hometown. What a shame that was. Don’t be that guy.

There are at LEAST three more chances. Go live your dream Mr. Clarett, if the NFL is, in fact, your dream. Don’t go out with a whimper and don’t be lazy. If the NFL REALLY is your dream, then go after it with passion and fervor and don’t take “no” for an answer.

And I am going to let you in on why so many people, including me are so upset with you. It is because we see you as having so much talent, but not using it. And we see that as a tremendous waste. And that is why we all get upset and call you a “whiney ass little bitch” and what not.

But here’s the dirty little secret Mr. Clarett. And I’m not sure if this makes it better or worse. But all of us in this world have just as much talent at SOMETHING as you seem to have at football. But most of us seem to feel that we never get the opportunity to get to do what we REALLY want to do in life. We make trade-offs and sacrifices and what not and we never seem to feel that we get to do the things that we really LOVE. But these are our own choices in life. So when we see somebody that seems to have everything gifted to him or her on a silver platter and still find a way to manage to screw it all up, we tend to get angry and stamp our feet and call them names. But that is just our own immaturity. What we are thinking is “Man, if I just had that kind of talent, I wouldn’t screw it up.” But, the secret is that we all DO have that kind of talent and we generally DO screw it up.

So, you’re not alone in this world Maurice, not by a long shot. But just remember, only you can decide when your dream dies. Nobody else has that right. So let them call you whatever names that they want to but don’t give up your dream. It’s your dream and you have plenty of time to live it, whether it is this year or next year, it is YOUR dream to live. So if the NFL truly IS your dream, then go after it. Sure, maybe you will have to get a job in the mean time and thus have to work a little harder at it than if you had gone the “silver plate” route, but just keep making PROGRESS toward your dream and don’t let your dream die. And if the NFL ISN’T your dream, then; again, don’t worry about what others say and hold on tight, to your dreams.
